Keeping Your Dog Safe in Hot Weather

Summer brings longer days and more outdoor time — but also serious risks for dogs. Heatstroke can develop quickly and is life-threatening. Here’s how to keep walks safe when temperatures rise.

The Pavement Test

Place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Asphalt and dark concrete can reach temperatures far above air temperature and cause burns.

Timing Is Everything

Walk early in the morning or after sunset. Midday walks in peak heat should be avoided or kept extremely short and in shaded areas only.

Hydration & Cooling

  • Carry water for both of you.
  • Offer frequent small drinks rather than one large one.
  • Consider a cooling vest or wet towel for longer outings.
  • Never leave a dog in a parked car — temperatures rise dangerously fast even with windows cracked.

Know the Warning Signs

Heavy panting, excessive drooling, bright red gums, weakness, vomiting, or collapse require immediate action: move to shade, cool with water (not ice), and contact a vet urgently.

Adjusting your routine for the weather is one of the simplest ways to show responsible care. Your dog will thank you with many more happy summers together.
